While you get a plumber onto it, a few quick things can stop a bad problem getting worse. Only do what's safe and easy to reach.
Burst or badly leaking pipe: turn the water off at your mains meter, usually at the front boundary of the property. Then open a tap or two to drain the line and take the pressure off. Here's how to turn your water off if you're not sure.
Smell of gas: don't touch any light or power switches, open doors and windows, turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely, get everyone outside, and call your gas provider's faults line.
Water near power, or coming through the ceiling: stay well clear, switch the power off at the board only if it's safe and dry to reach, and don't touch any wet electrical fittings.
Overflowing drain or toilet: stop running water and flushing, and keep people and pets away from any waste water until it's sorted.
No hot water: if it's a gas unit and you can smell gas, treat it as a gas problem above. Otherwise it's safe to leave until we get to you.
